Bakamuna’s first ever Pop-up will be hosted by the Hilton Colombo from 23rd June till 1st July. Bakamuna is a mixed media lifestyle design brand powered by MTI’s idea2fund which is a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs.
The concept of the Pop-up being a flexible and mobile shopping experience; inspired Bakamuna to repurpose a functional bullock cart. The Sri Lankan traditional mode of transportation has been given a modern vibe with the use of contemporary design elements to showcase a range of lifestyle products. Cultural vintage items such as the ekel broom and rice kulla have been used as props for the store, further reinstating Bakamuna’s signature design style; traditional elements with a contemporary twist.
Bakamuna draws inspiration from indigenous cultures, nature, music and many other elements and environments. The Pop-up will carry a range of mixed media lifestyle products such as homeware, stationary and accessories. Mixed Media is Bakamuna’s specialty; an art form where two or more mediums such as ink and digital mediums or painting and collage are combined in to a single composition. Bakamuna has taken this concept a step further and have also incorporated materials such as wood, rubber and fabric in to their products.
A part of the proceeds from the project will go towards aiding art therapy based programs for centers catering to children who are economically challenged. Having conducted similar art therapy workshops earlier this year at a leading international school for special needs students, Bakamuna is further extending their helping hand.
“By using mixed media we are able to bring together many different elements to create a concept that is truly unique! We are very excited to be able to share our work and connect with all those who come by the store. We look forward to sharing the stories behind our products and to have everyone be part of the ‘Bakamuna experience’,” said Chief Bakamuna/CEO, Rochelle Bibile.
Bakamuna’s mantra is to Create, Connect and Collaborate. The company creates original design concepts and mixed media illustrations, connects with individuals and facilitates idea expression, and collaborates with the community to celebrate life through art! They actively support the local art community and encourage diverse forms of creative expression.
